Tribal Transportation is developing a corridor report to determine the condition of Heart Butte Road, to determine if it is ready for an asphalt overlay or if not, then the Report will recommend any corrective action needed, rehabilitation, or reconstruction sections for the route. This involves designing 32.5-miles of roadway on BIA 1 between Browning at the intersection of US Highway 89 and to the Blackfeet Reservation border near the Birch Creek Bridge on the Blackfeet Reservation (Reference Post (RP) 0.0 to RP 32.5).

This project encourages public participation, and meetings will kick off public involvement. The preparation of renderings and graphics will be included for the public information/meetings based on Tribal Transportation’s desires.

Paved roadway striping for certain routes within the Blackfeet Indian Reservation.

Tribal Transportation is currently planning a pavement striping project that would provide new striping on approximately 100 miles of paved roadways throughout the Reservation. This work will provide an immediate safety improvement for the traveling public. Anticipation is to secure a Contractor to perform this work during the 2026 construction season.

The Tribe received a $4.9 million federal RAISE grant for the planning and design of infrastructure improvements within Browning, MT. Improvements include roadway reconstruction and resurfacing, adding American with Disabilities Act (ADA) accessible sidewalks, stormwater drainage improvements, and enhancing pedestrian safety. The proposed improvements will increase access to essential services, support economic development, and accommodate tourism into Glacier National Park. The planning and design began in 2025 and is expected to take until 2027. Once plans are finalized, the Tribe will seek additional federal funding to start the construction.

New construction of 3 miles of roadway on the west side of Browning, MT.

During peak demand, there is a traffic flow issue for travelers attempting to get from Highway 89 to Star School Road. Traffic must either flow through North Piegan Street or north on Highway 464. The proposed Last Star Road would create an intersection along Highway 89 near the High School and provide a through road that connects with Star School Road west of Flat Iron Road. The project involves researching right-of-way, survey, design, cultural and environmental review, wetland survey, and ultimately leading to a shovel ready project.

There will be extensive public engagement and outreach efforts necessary to allow Tribal Transportation to make decisions and provide direction on how to proceed with the project.

Road Safety Audit of approximately 77 miles of paved roadways throughout the Blackfeet Indian Reservation.

The Safety Audit will provide accurate and verifiable field safety condition assessments critical to providing the data-driven improvement recommendations for approximately 77 miles of the Blackfeet Nation’s Tribal Transportation Program Transportation Network. The data will allow the Tribe to more accurately and efficiently apply its limited transportation and safety funding to implement smart well-planned safety enhancements for the traveling public. Field data collection will be input into a GIS and an analysis of safety conditions of the roads, intersections, and bridges will identify where to place emphasis on safety projects.
