Roadway Safety Quickfacts
Walking, Biking, Skating, & Scooters
- Be Safe, Be Seen: Just because you can see oncoming traffic, doesn't always mean drivers can see you.
Wear light or bight colors, use reflective gear, and carry a flashlight or mount a light on your bike/scooter.
- Heads Up Phones Down: Keep your phones stored and your hands free when crossing the street.
- Make Eye Contact: Make sure drivers see you before crossing the street.
- Protect Your Head: Wear your helmet when biking, skating, or riding a scooter. Helmets greatly reduce the risk of serious injuries in the event of a crash.
Driver Safety
- Buckle Up: Always wear your seat belt and make sure everyone is buckled up on every trip. Seat belts reduce the risk of getting hurt or killed in a car crash by nearly 50 percent.
- Watch for Bikes and Pedestrians: Watch for people crossing the street when approaching intersections.
- Slow Down: Reduce your speed near schools and areas with bikes and pedestrians.
- Avoid Distractions: Stay alert and keep your eyes on the road.
- Drive Sober: Don't drink and drive, even one drink can impair your judgement and ability to drive safely.
