Project Background

The Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate (SWO) Department of Transportation is currently working working with KLJ Engineering to develop a Comprehensive Safety Action Plan, which is funded through the US Department of Transportation's Safe Streets and Roads for All program. The Safety Action Plan uses a combination of data and community input to identify and prioritize roadway safety improvements that address safety challenges for all roadway users within the Lake Traverse Reservation.

Tribal leaders and staff have already taken important first steps towards improving roadway safety within the LTR multimodal transportation systems through the recent Transportation Vulnerability Assessment. This project assessed impacts to the transportation system during environmental hazard events and helped SWO to identify implementable solutions to improve transportation resiliency.

Safe Streets for All

  • Federal Program

The US Department of Transportation started the Safe Streets for All program to fund projects that prevent serious injuries and deaths on roads.

  • Planning Grant

SWO received federal grant money to develop a Safety Action Plan.

  • Public Feedback

We need your input to identify safety issues on roads throughout the Lake Traverse Reservation.

  • Future Funding

Once the Safety Action Plan is complete, SWO will be eligible to apply for additional federal grants to implement identified safety improvements.
